Hazardous chemicals are essential to a wide variety of industries, impacting everything from manufacturing and agriculture to consumer goods and energy. While these hazardous substances are essential, they also present various dangers to Canadian workers due to their physical or chemical properties. Because of these dangers, Health Canada developed the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, known throughout Canada as “WHMIS.”
This program provides an overview of key components of WHMIS and the various methods used to communicate a chemical’s hazards so that employees will be better prepared to work safely with and around chemicals. Topics include:
- What is required in a WHMIS program
- When WHMIS was recently amended
- The process of Hazard Classification
- The information on a supplier label
- What pictograms represent
- The information found on an SDS
