AP Safety Training Creates Customized Training Video for Bonneville Power Administration
In spring of 2021, Bonneville Power Administration of Vancouver, Washington was looking to implement a video-based training program to meet their compliance requirements for providing onsite safety training.
With over 260 high-voltage electrical substations in the Pacific Northwest, they needed a way to deliver consistent safety and security information to the employees and contractors.
BPA selected AP Safety Training for this project. They knew AP Safety Training had plenty of experience successfully delivering similar, complex training programs for other large organizations.
Nicole Rutherford with BPA says, “When we spoke with Jennifer and Danny at AP Safety Training, they explained in detail the process we would follow to develop the program and what would be required. We chose AP Safety Training for this project because of their experience with similar projects and ability to deliver a turnkey solution.”
The production team at AP Safety Training, headed up by owner and president Danny Robinson, worked closely with the BPA stakeholders. They started breaking down BPA’s internal procedures and processes into a list of required instructional points that needed to be included in the final program.
To help ensure the accuracy of the training content, AP Safety Training sent a video crew to one of BPA’s sites in Washington. They filmed and transcribed one of BPA’s most experienced substation operators conducting a safety orientation tour.
According to Danny Robinson, “When developing customized training, it’s important to include the practical experience of the workers performing the tasks. We often find a divergence between written procedures and real-world experiences. Sending our team on site presents a great opportunity for an organization to review their procedures to ensure that the program we are creating for them contains exactly the information they desire.”
By combining the “real world” information provided by experienced substation operators with existing BPA safety and security procedures, AP Safety Training was able to create a video script that captured all of the unique needs of Bonneville Power Administration.
AP Safety Training then quickly brought the script to life by sending two video crews to the Pacific Northwest. They interacted with participating BPA employees and supervisors to capture the unique safety- and security-related footage needed for the video project.
AP Safety Training’s president, Danny Robinson, summarized the project by stating, “I enjoy projects like this the most. It allows us to fully engross ourselves in our client’s processes and procedures and create a customized training program that exactly meets their needs.”
Alan Connors with BPA describes the overall project as a great success.
“AP Safety Training delivered a program that exceeded our expectations,” says Connors. “I was impressed by how organized the project was at each stage and with the ability of AP Safety Training to deliver the finished program on time and on budget.”
